Encyclopedia of World History
Summary
Designed to complement the National Standards, and written to be accessible to high school students, this seven-volume reference is arranged into six chronological eras, one per volume, with Vol.7 devoted to primary documents and a comprehensive index. The material in each of the chronological volumes is arranged into alphabetical entries, making this a useful resource to supplement a world history textbook. The entries include biographies of notable thinkers, political and religious figures; descriptions of significant battles and military events; dynasties and kingdoms; art and culture; peoples and regions. Equal coverage of Asia, Europe, and the Islamic world is consistent throughout, though the US and China somewhat dominate the final two volumes, which cover 1900-2007. Each entry concludes with cross-references and a list of further reading; an index is included at the end of each volume for that era. Notable are the excellent full-page color maps included at the center of each volume, with as
many as 30 maps per volume, each devoted to a specific historical topic. All five editors are historians at Eastern Michigan U.

Library Journal Review
Six volumes in this set cover a specific time period, from the ancient world to the present day. Volume 7 is made up of a master index and 110 primary documents (e.g., the Code of Hammurabi and the Testimony at Nuremberg). The content is "closely aligned to the (1994) National Standards for World History and the College Board's Advanced Placement World History course," a platform that has been criticized by some historians for its anti-great man and anti-dominant civilizations bias. Each volume begins with a chronology and a ten-page essay covering five themes: food production, scientific and technological developments, social and class relationships, trade and culture, and warfare. Overall, 2000 signed entries are included, each running approximately 700 words in length. Though the set is determinedly international in scope and coverage, most of the contributors are from American universities. The writing style is a bit awkward, and the concepts are sometimes used without definition. On the other hand, the photos and 32 maps scattered throughout the text add depth and interest. BOTTOM LINE Although Facts On File published the one-volume Encyclopedia of World History in 2000, this set competes with ABC-CLIO's upcoming 21-volume Encyclopedia of World History, slated for release in 2009 (priced at
$1,845, with e-version). Students may use it, stylists will wince, and historians will complain about the missing dead white guys. This resource does not possess the level of scholarship found in Encyclopaedia Britannica, but it is certainly adequate in this format for use in schools and colleges. Some may prefer to wait for ABC-CLIO's Encyclopedia of World History next year before deciding which of the two to purchase. [Available in print only.]-Janice Dunham, John Jay Coll.
